On the shore of Lake Tekapo, at the base of Mt. John. On top are several large telescopes, part of the Mt. John Observatory complex. It is a joint effort between Japan and the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. From the top one night I saw the Southern Milky Way extend to the horizon and then kept going, as if below the horizon. I was dumbfounded, but then realized the image was a reflection of the milky way on the calm lake below.
